Delta
Doc O Lena kicked
off the new year by winning the largest junior paint cutting class ever held at
the Southwest Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas. The 1997 stallion, owned by Wet Paint Farms of Omaha, Nebraska, bested 23 other
horses by taking
firsts under all four judges on January 14. With Chubby Turner in the
saddle, the bay tobiano earned $2,027 at the event, which was part of the Zone 4
Paint-O-Rama.

Sponsored by the American
Paint Horse Association and the stock show, the cutting offered a total purse of
$25,000, with $4,000 added for the junior class.
Delta Doc O Lena's owner, Amy Romeo, thought her horse would perform well, but
the win was even better than she anticipated. "Chubby only had Delta
Doc O Lena for 30 days before he was hauled to Fort Worth," she
said.
"We expected him to do well because of his
bloodlines. His sire, DELTA
FLYER (APHA)
earned more than $210,000 in the cutting pen. His dam is JAVOLENA, (AQHA)
a top National Cutting Horse Association- producing daughter of DOC O LENA whose offspring have
earned more than $87,000.
APHA sponsored the cutting this year to encourage
talented paints to compete, and it worked. Because of the large number of
entries, exhibitors were divided into two sets of horses.
"As an association, we wanted to offer more incentives for
Paint Horse owners to enter their horses in cutting competition and
give greater exposure to these talented Paints," explained
APHA’s Jim Kelly. "There are a lot of great paint cutting
horses out there and this is a chance for those competitors to earn
points and money at the same time."
